Internal Transfers & Donations

Animal Care Services (ACS) supports the movement of animals between UBC facilities, and is proud to promote the ACUP-wide Animal & Tissue Donation Program as a practical way to advance the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement).

Transferring Animals Between ACUP Facilities

Investigators that procure animals from within the ACUP (their own facility or another UBC Animal Facility) must:

  • Request the transfer in Mosaic using the ACUP transfer task, as outlined in the Mosaic – ACUP Animal Transfer How-To document found on the ACUP SharePoint page.
  • For transfer requests between ACUP facilities, also submit a Transport/Transfer Request via email to anca.orders@ubc.ca, and cc the sending and receiving facility.

Investigators in facilities not using Mosaic must complete the Transport/Transfer Request and email it to anca.orders@ubc.ca, cc'ing the sending and receiving facility.

The ACUP Procurement Team will obtain veterinary approval for all animal transfers as required.

Timing: A minimum of 24 hours' notice is required for any animal transfer. Approvals may take up to 72 hours (not including holidays and weekends).

Support the 3Rs: Animal & Tissue Donation Program

Have surplus animals or tissue? Don't discard it, donate it!

One of the most effective ways to support the 3Rs is to identify surplus animals and/or tissue that can be donated to other research labs instead of being euthanized or disposed of unused. The ACS Animal Welfare Committee has established an ACUP-wide Animal and Tissue Donation Program that makes it simple to:

  • Donate surplus animals or tissue your lab no longer needs.
  • Review and request available animals or tissue currently offered by other labs across the ACUP.

All ACUP researchers are encouraged to participate, whether by offering surplus animals for donation or by using animals already available from other labs before placing a new commercial or non-commercial order.

Tip for researchers: Before submitting a new commercial or non-commercial order, check the Donation Program listings first. A suitable animal may already be available internally, saving cost and reducing overall animal use.

Need Transport Support?

ACS provides supply and animal transport and transfer services between facilities. Investigators wishing to use ACS transport services must complete the Transport/Transfer Request form and email it to anca.orders@ubc.ca. The ACUP Procurement Team will coordinate the transport.

For questions about any internal transfer, contact the ACUP Procurement Team at anca.orders@ubc.ca or 604-827-4938.
