Animal Care Services

Animal Care Services works closely with the Animal Care Committee to provide services in support of the UBC Animal Care & Use Program.

Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Research & Innovation, our services include research support, veterinary services, compliance, training, procurement, animal housing, technical services and administrative support. Each member of our team contributes to the care and welfare of laboratory animals and to the research that leads to improved health for people and animals. 

Animal Care Services supports researchers through:

 

ACS Leadership Team

  • Oversight of ACS operations and services
  • Business development and expansion of research capabilities
  • Maintaining a safe and efficient ACS research environment
  • Providing strategic support to AVP and the Animal Care & Use Program
  • Developing and maintaining communication channels with researchers and stakeholders
  • Facilitating researcher recruitment and integration into Animal Care and Use Program
  • Supporting efficient and effective research activities by balancing CCAC compliance with researcher needs

 

Veterinary Services Team

  • Advanced surgical procedures and specialized technical services for research animals
  • Developing and refining research protocols to ensure scientific merit and animal welfare
  • Developing and maintaining appropriate animal models for specific research needs
  • In-house diagnostic testing and histological analysis to support animal health and research outcomes
  • Educational programs and workshops on animal handling, husbandry, and research procedures

Compliance Team

  • Facility audits - conducting comprehensive inspections to ensure animal care facilities meet regulatory standards
  • Continuing review - maintain ongoing oversight of research protocols to safeguard animal welfare
  • Post-Approval Monitoring - verify adherence to approved protocols and ethical animal use

Business Operations Team

  • Efficiently manage the procurement, delivery, and movement of animals for research
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations and administrative functions
  • Strategic initiatives to continuously improve ACS and support advancements in research
