Choose your Facility and meet your Facility Manager

Choosing your facility and meeting the facility manager prior to writing or submitting your protocol is highly recommended.

Once you choose your facility, following a discussion with the University Veterinarian, you should meet your facility manager. Facility managers are able to provide valuable information on availability of space, appropriate containment levels, shared equipment/space, and staff expertise within the facility. They will also be able to provide you with facility SOPs that can be attached to your protocol, and information about standard care within the facility (daily monitoring, caging, environmental enrichment, etc.) This is also an opportunity to tap into their vast knowledge on animal procedures, and they may be able to help you detail your techniques and applicable post-procedural monitoring, and provide feedback/input on expectations of monitoring from both the facility staff and researcher side.
