Reduction

Reduction

Reduction means using the fewest animals needed for valid results, while maximizing information gained per animal without compromising welfare. It can be achieved by reducing the number of experiments overall, reducing animals per experiment, or sharing animals, tissue, or data across studies.

Support the 3Rs: Animal & Tissue Donation Program

The ACUP-wide Animal and Tissue Donation Program lets researchers:

  • Donate surplus animals or tissue instead of discarding them unused.
  • Review and request available animals or tissue currently offered by other labs across the ACUP.

This directly reduces the total number of animals bred or ordered across UBC. Check current listings before submitting a new commercial or non-commercial order.

See the Internal Transfers & Donations page for full guidance.

Notes on Reduction

A well-powered study that succeeds the first time avoids repeat studies later, often reducing overall animal use more than simply minimizing numbers upfront. Consult your Clinical Veterinarian or a biostatistician to ensure your sample size is scientifically justified.
